Advanced Manual Therapy

Hands On Physiotherapy Malta specialises on the use of Manual Therapy for the treatment and management of pain, stiffness, and other conditions of the body that have a physical component to the symptoms. The conditions that can successfully managed with Manual Therapy are listed in the homepage and include neck pain and headaches, low bck pain and sciatica, shoulder pain, tennis elbow and much more.

The Manual Therapy approach used at Hands On Physiotherapy Malta is an advanced approach since every condition is addressed with a combination of techniques, all based on a series of principles, each of which requires extensive training and practice to master. This approach in addressing the list of painful conditions that patients present with, has been found to not only be highly effective but also very efficient in terms of recovery time.

The practice of Manual Therapy is regarded as highly effective is also due to the high level of clinical reasoning employed in to the treatment of painful conditions. Often times the techniques applied can appear simple to the untrained eye. A manual Therapist is highly trained in not just applying a technique, but in bringing in line all the relevant concepts and principles that govern mechanisms of injury and recovery, so that both the symptoms and the cause behind the patient’s distress can be addressed and resolved.

Excercise Prescription

The right exercises can do for you all the therapy you need to get back on track. Did you know that some exercises can help strengthen muscles whilst others can help switch muscles off?

Did you know that some exercises can help stretch muscles whilst other exercises can help with your balance? What is the difference between exercise and doing house chores? Some exercises can be of benefit to some conditions whilst can be of harm to others.

The benefits of specifically given exercises can be just the right form of therapy for those patients who want to speed up their recovery, have little time to come to the clinic, or simply want to be an active participant in their recovery.

At Hands On Physiotherapy Malta we like to combine the benefits of manual therapy to those of exercise prescription to speed up your recovery whilst aiming to get the best possible outcome.

We understand that some patients have a feel for the compound exercises whilst other prefer the more subtle and refined approach. Whatever the problem, we have a list of exercises to help you overcome it.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation

Surgical interventions are at times the necessary option for your condition. The factors that lead to surgery are infinite and can take place in a singular event, such as with accidents, or can be the result of a long period of progressive deterioration of your condition. Nonetheless, the majority of surgical interventions, especially those of an orthopaedic nature, attain the best outcome by following them up with a tailor-made rehabilitation program.

Despite the advances made in orthopaedics, the body still perceives these interventions as a trauma from which it needs to recovery. Left to its own devises the body’s response is to seek a fast resolution rather than one of quality; it is this quality of recovery that would allow you to resume as much of the normality in terms of movement.

At Hands On Physiotherapy Malta we are aware of the importance of starting immediate and specific rehabilitation to maximise the outcome of your surgery. Pain management techniques and tailor made mobility programs will put you on a steady and efficient path towards achieving the best possible level of mobility and function.

Pain Management (for acute and chronic conditions)

Pain conditions us in numerous ways. No other sensation gets us to worry and to seek some form of help or advice more than pain; and rightly so. Without pain we might tend to ignore the signals of our body and soldier on with meeting the demands of our life.
However, at times, pain becomes counterproductive.

When pain itself stops being a warning light that goes off but starts to take over all aspects of our lives, then we need some form of pain management approach. Nowadays there are various forms of how to manage ones pain; there are medicinal approaches, surgical interventions, diet, alternative therapies and movement therapies.

At Hands On Physiotherapy Malta we adopt a variety of conservative (non-surgical) methods that can assist you with the management of your pain. By discussing these options with you we are certain that we can find a way to make your fight in reclaiming your life back at little easier, and this little help can be all you need to tip the scales in your favour.

Elderly Care and Mobility

Staying active and mobile is a guaranteed way for the elderly to stay independent and maximise longevity. For various reasons the elderly often find themselves limited in the opportunities that get them to exercise and maintain their mobility. Unfortunately no other age group gets to suffer more from inadequate mobility.

At Hands On Physiotherapy Malta we are aware that not all movement is exercise, and that not all exercise is appropriate for everyone. Whilst some might benefit from exercises to improve their balance and co-ordination, others might need more emphasis to improve their strength or endurance; and whilst some might need more of a generic approach to exercise others might need something more specific, like addressing their shoulder, hip or back.

Luckily, your mobility needs and requirements can all be acknowledged and adequately managed.

On-Site Ergonomic Assessments

Office workers often underestimate the impact of their sitting on their health and wellbeing. This is evident in the pain and aches they often complain of and yet fail to associate them to spending endless hours in sitting.

Yours workstation ergonomics has a direct impact on the quality of your posture which in turn affects both the quality of your work and your well-being. At Hands On Physiotherapy Malta we are fully aware of the influence of ergonomics on your aches and pain. Dr Carlo Conti has carried extensive research as part of his doctoral studies, to help determine what is considered optimal sitting posture and how best to achieve this within the office environment.

We believe that unless the ergonomic setup at work is not addressed, then your aches and pains cannot be treated successfully. This is why we are offering this on-site ergonomic service. By adjusting your workstation ergonomics to suit all your needs and requirements we are confident that your rehabilitation program will be more complete and more effective.

Home Physiotherapy Service

If you have been referred for Physiotherapy but cannot make it to one of our clinics then this section is for you. Over the years we have developed a new branch to our list of services, where we can come to you.

Depending on your condition, the first step to be made is to get in touch with us. Once we are made known of your condition and location we will do our utmost to bring to you the service that you need so that you may get the benefits that you seek.

Clinical Hypnotherapy

Considered to be one of the most relaxing therapies available – reason being is that the state of mind promoted during clinical hypnosis is the most natural state of mind adopted by every individual.

So natural is this state of mind that we often we find ourselves entering this state several times per day. These moments often described as daydreaming or blissful moments, as peaceful and relaxing as they can be, do not create the required change that would allow us to overcome our problems.

During a hypnotherapy session we can guide clients into accessing these natural states, and through the skillful use of suggestion, help them to overcome their problems. Nowadays Clinical Hypnosis is vastly researched and gone are the days when it was shrouded in mystery and feared as mind control.

The use of Clinical Hypnosis can be used for more than just overcoming anxiety and stress.

The application of clinical hypnosis at Hands On Physiotherapy Malta is used to target medically related conditions such as chronic pain, fibromyalgia, chronic tension headaches and more. We also have seen positive results in the management of weight loss whereby clinical hypnosis was used to resolve any underlying problem leading to poor eating habits.

A Typical Physiotherapy Session

A typical Physiotherapy session starts off with a booked appointment where the patient gets all the required time to sit with their therapist to discuss their problem. Your Physiotherapist will present you with a serious of questions, some pertaining to your ongoing condition, and others related to what might influence your recovery.

This approach of thorough questioning is significantly important to the successful recovery of our patients and at Hands On Physiotherapy Malta we take pride in this diagnostic ability or ours. Through this approach your therapist can often deduce what complex imagery and other complicated tests can indicate, and in many cases spare you need of having such tests carried out altogether.

Once your therapist is satisfied with the information gathered from the questioning, they move on to the physical part of the assessment. In this part, the patient is asked to carry out certain movements or adopt certain basic positions by themselves or with some help. By the end of this part of the assessment your therapist would have a strong indication of what is wrong, what is the cause to your symptoms and how best to treat it. On your first session an initial treatment is often given so that the patient can start to feel better immediately.

At the end of each sessions most patients can be given an exercise or two to carry out at home, coupled with some advice of what to do and what to avoid doing. At Hands On Physiotherapy Malta we believe that it is better to give one or two exercises that will be done correctly than to provide a list of endless exercises that only serve to confuse patients.

In follow-up sessions, there will be a small time spent on reappraising the progress made; however most of the follow-up sessions are dedicated to treating the patient. At Hands On Physiotherapy Malta we like to think that every treatment is in itself an assessment because through every session we can assess the efficacy of both our diagnosis and our strategy. This approach allows us to stay open for any new piece of information that presents itself and can serve to facilitate recovery.
